When former Miss World New Zealand Jessica Tyson transitioned into becoming a news reporter she probably didn’t think out-of-control birds were something to worry about. Now she does.
Tyson, 32, from Whanganui, was named Miss World New Zealand in 2018, after winning the Miss Teen World pageant in Australia in 2008. She also placed second at Miss World New Zealand that same year. Tyson later took part in Miss International in Tokyo in 2016 and won Miss Global City in Shanghai in 2017.
Recently, she was recording a report for Māori television’s current affairs show Te Ao with Moana in Auckland’s central business district. As she was readying herself for another take, she got blindsided by a white bird traveling at a high rate of speed. And by blindsided, we mean that literally as it crashed directly into her face.
“The commitment to the job is real!” Jessica Tyson wrote in the caption of the video on her Instagram account. When she got hit by the bird, she grabbed her face and let out an understandable, “Oh s—!” Then when the cameraperson pointed out that she was bleeding, she replied, “Am I?!!”
Jessica Tyson was able to laugh about having her face bloodied by a flying bird
Responding to a comment on her post, Tyson said, “It was so weird, a couple of weeks [ago] I really badly cut my finger with this knife that went through my nail THEN I fell off my bike in Fiji and injured my arm (with minor fracture or ligament damage according to doctor) and then this happened! Sooooo weird! We did some karakia to try make sure it doesn’t happen again!”
Later, Tyson shared a photo of her bloodied face and assured her fans, “Everything is fine, just got a little scar above my eye!”
“Oh heeeeelll noooo,” Australian Idol winner Stan Walker, who is also Tyson’s brother-in-law, wrote in the comments.
“Are we allowed to laugh or is it too soon?” Alex Keepence, the official license holder of Miss World New Zealand, asked.
“YES, I was laughing about 10mins after it happened hahaha!” Jessica Tyson replied.
