There’s nothing like getting that reward you wanted and having it go wrong. Whether it is the McDonald’s Coke you’ve been craving, only for it to be flat when you finally get it. Or maybe, it’s a slightly more specialized treat.
One Virginia hairstylist discovered that sometimes, the right treat goes really, really barbecue-sauce wrong. It’s the kind of thing you cannot really prepare your palate for.
Sweet, Not Savory
Alyssa Morgan (@thealyssamorgan) wanted a little dessert, so she DoorDashed a piece of cake—Applebee’s Triple Chocolate Meltdown, specifically. It’s a cake that’s drizzled with hot fudge and served with vanilla ice cream—850 glorious, warm, fudge-filled calories.
In a video that’s been watched 616,100 times, Morgan explains what happened. And while technically, yes, she did have a meltdown. It was not of the triple chocolate variety.
“I ordered a molten chocolate lava cake from Applebee’s,” she says as she gestures toward her to-go container with the mini bundt cake inside. It looks very saucy and fudgy. It’s the epitome of a decadent dessert you want to eat by yourself and let the frustrations of the day fade away.
Then she holds up a container that had been packed with the cake. “I assumed it was hot fudge for my ice cream,” she says.
So she drizzled it on her ice cream.
At Least DoorDash Refunded Her
“It’s not hot fudge,” she says as her voice starts to break. “It’s barbecue sauce!”
In the video’s caption, she explains that for her inability to eat her ice cream, DoorDash refunded her $2.
The internet is sympathizing but only to a point.
“The way this would send me into pure rage,” says BFF Barbie (@bffbarbie), basically summarizing what’s wrong with the interaction. Morgan really has no recourse except to try again.
While other users say it’s her duty to double-check the entirety of the order: “That happens because there’s a rush and someone is new and they’re too rushed to check they’re putting the right sauce. It sucks. But it’s also YOUR job to check the food before you add stuff to it. Just because it LOOKS like chocolate sauce doesn’t mean it actually is. Sorry for the ruined ice cream tho,” instructed Melmmhs94 (@melmmhs94).
Still, others noted the singularity of the internet. “If TikTok has taught me anything, either today or tomorrow I’m gonna get a video of someone complaining about getting chocolate sauce with their ribs,” Based Drengr (@baseddrengr) said.
Then there’s Alexandra Nicole (@alexandranicole11), who took it to a whole other level. “This would have been my 13th reason,” she said.
She’s making a very dark joke, referencing the teen drama Thirteen Reasons Why, which focuses on a character’s suicide.
My Food Delivery Is Messed Up. Whose Fault Is It?
Short answer: Move on, let the ice cream go. But if you’re really wanting justice (or fudge sauce), the personal finance blog Financial Panther’s advice is to contact DoorDash. Of course, Morgan already did, and their adjudication was that her frustration at their mistake was worth $2.
However, there are things you can do to lessen the chances of getting an incorrect order. First, don’t ask for extra items in the notes portion of the order. Dashers don’t see that information until they’ve picked up the order. Second, use a credit card on your order because they come with more consumer protections than a debit card.
Finally (as several users commented), double-check your sauces before ruining your dessert.
The thing is—as Reddit informs any curious reader, using DoorDash can be a frustrating experience. With blame shifting depending on where you stand. Restaurants blame Dashers, and Dashers blame restaurants.
“People are careless. Dashers only get paid $2 per order + tip, if there even is one. So they generally don’t care. DoorDash should pay more if they want better drivers,” said u/Seppy3rd. And perhaps that’s the truth: as one (now deleted) user wrote, “Dashers are rewarded for speed, not accuracy. They get your tip, and get their payment whether the order is right or not.”
Sadly, the only person who really loses is Morgan, who got dollars instead of ice cream—a raw deal no matter how you scoop it.
