Close your eyes and listen. That sound you here is the army of millennials assembling to check out the first official trailer for Mortal Kombat 2, the Hollywood sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat and the film adaptation of the video game millennials played for countless hours back in the early 90s.
Mortal Kombat 2 starring Karl Urban, who was interviewed her at BroBible last week, is set to hit theaters on May 8th.
First Trailer For ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Drops
Here is what we know so far:
Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage. Jessica McNamee (The Meg / Battle of the Sexes) stars as Sonya Blade. Ludi Lin (Power Rangers / Aquaman) will play Liu Kang. Other characters appearing in the film include but are not limited to Kitana, Jade, Kano, Shao Khan, Lord Raiden, Jax, and Baraka.
The IMDB tagline states “the fan favorite champions — now joined by Johnny Cage himself — are pitted against one another in the ultimate battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.” Which is to be expected as that’s the basis of the video game franchise.
Filming took place primarily in Queensland, Australia which does not give us a ton of insight into the aesthetics of the film. It was primarily shot on the Gold Coast and at the Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford, Queensland.
In the YouTube comments, one person called this the ‘year of martial arts films’ referring to a new Street Fighter film in the works. Another person commented “Can’t wait for this. Man this trailer is so hyped.”
I wouldn’t even be able to begin to estimate the number of hours I played Mortal Kombat when it came out back in 1992 for Sega Genesis and SNES. The Genesis was my console of choice. I’d say it still is if we’re getting nostalgic. But I am hyped for this film. If anything it’s the first movie I’m looking forward to this Summer and given that the bar is incredibly low with Hollywood adapting video games into movies, I have a feeling this one will deliver the goods.
At the same time, me shelling out $20 for a ticket just to hear Scorpion say ‘GET OVER HERE’ feels like Boomers getting hyped for Clash of the Titans which was not at all worth a trip to the theaters, IMHO.
