Breakups are rarely smooth, but one Nashville man decided to make his cheating ex’s move-out day just a little more dramatic (and messy).
The messiest (but mostly harmless) thing most people would do during a cheating-fueled breakup is pack up their partner’s clothes and tell them to move out, or take it a step further and throw their belongings out on the front lawn.
But viewers are now taking inspiration from the messy moment to torment their own former lovers in a more creative way.
The man behind the moment is now speaking out.
Would You Do This To An Ex?
Scorned lover Zachary (@zachary.w) had a wildly viral video that hit more than 21 million views.
In the clip, he explained that his ex cheated on him, so to make his life harder while he moved out of their shared home, he hired a mariachi performer to bring a chaotic touch to the process.
In the video, Zachary seems to be sipping champagne while his ex struggles to dismount and then drops his TV. All the while, a one-man mariachi band is loudly singing “Guantanamera” over and over.
It’s a good song the first time, and maybe the second time you hear it. But it starts to get irritating hearing it over and over again in the midst of a tense movie.
The mariachi was so committed to the bit that he even followed the ex and his moving helper out to U-Haul, where he kept singing at the top of his lungs.
Mariachi Man Speaks Out
“Somebody hired my grandpa as a mariachi to play while their ex moved out of their house,” creator (and granddaughter of a now TikTok legend) Maliya Trevino (@maliyatrevinoo) said in a viral video with more than 5.3 million views.
Her grandfather, Luis Trevino, explained that Zachary asked him to “play for his move-out ex-boyfriend lover of two years to come and serenade him and just annoy him.
“That’s how I got the gig,” Luis said.
Commenters were curious whether it was difficult for Luis to stay in character and try not to laugh, and he shared that he was taking the gig quite seriously because the moment wasn’t as funny for him as it looked online.
“The whole moment was intense and serious, and I was worried that it could get ugly,” Luis explained. “One thing that wasn’t shown is that the ex-lover actually did get a little bit aggressive.”
“He didn’t like that my grandpa was playing mariachi music while he was trying to get his stuff out of the house,” Maliya added.
Things Get Physical
Luis recounted that as he was following them into the townhouse, “he closed the door on my foot and pushed my hand back. So it got a little bit aggressive there.”
Still, grandpa kept his composure and his guitar steady.
“My grandpa is such a professional. He just kept playing anyway and just did the job he was hired for,” Maliya said.
Luis went on to share that in addition to the solo mariachi work, he also performs with a band. And before getting into this line of work, he had quite the resume. Luis just retired from NASA after 36 years. And he now works as a consultant to a Canadian aerospace engineering firm, “which allows me to play more events all across the US.”
Luis told BroBible that he wants to “emphasize that music is a medium for many situations from entertainment to now Zachary’s situation intended for two purposes: Turing heartbreak into a music filled therapeutic fiesta while possibly annoying the Ex lover turned out to be a ‘Double-edged sword.’ where the melodies soothed and protected Zachary as they grated the ears of the one he used to love.
“Many of my friends have stated they’ve never witnessed such a spectacle,” he added.
Luis set up his own TikTok. And you can book him for a performance here.
