There Are Rumors That ‘The New Mutants’ Will Go Straight To Disney+, Which Would Be The Right Decision

Disney

Fucking The New Mutants, man. This poor movie is cursed I tell ya — cursed!

Originally scheduled to be released back in April 2018, The New Mutants was ultimately delayed so that the film could undergo some reshoots to amp up the scares However, those reshoots oddly never occurred and the film was placed on 20th Century Fox’s backburner.

That all changed when the Mouse House swooped in and bought Fox, as they dusted off the Josh Boone-helmed horror flick and scheduled it for an April 3, 2020 release date. As we all know, as a result of The Big Cancel, that obviously hasn’t happened: not only was the film delayed, but unlike most of the other rescheduled new movies out there, it was not given a new release date, once again putting its release in jeopardy. I mean, just think about how long ago this movie was filmed: back when they shot this movie in the Summer of 2017, Game of Thrones was still good!

Still, though, you’d expect since Disney has this bullet in the chamber, they’re going to fire it eventually, right? Unless the film is an outright disaster that never deserves the light of day, there’s no reason to not release it.

And according to recent rumors, simply releasing it may be exactly Disney’s plan, as reports are now indicating that the film — along with others that were set for theatrical release, such as Artemis Fowl — will premiere on Disney+.

There are some we’ve decided to put on Disney+. We already announced one, Artemis Fowl, that would have been released in theaters. Others we’ve simply delayed. In some cases we’ve moved things onto Disney+ faster than we would have,” Disney executive chairman and former-CEO Bob Iger.

“In terms of movies going ahead after Artemis, there may be a few more that we end up putting directly onto Disney+, but for the most part a lot of the big tentpole Disney films, we’ll simply wait for slots. In some cases we’ve announced new ones already, but later on in the calendar.”

While Iger did not namecheck The New Mutants specifically, the consensus amongst fans seems to be that Disney+ is the most logical landing spot. However, as pointed out by Uproxx, “a deal would have to be reached between Disney and HBO for the frequently-delayed X-Men universe spin-off to come out on Disney+.”

As a massive comic book movie fan myself, while I doubt I’d check this one out in theaters, I would undoubtedly tune in on Disney+ the first night it became available. With the litany of delays that have plagued this film, at this point, it’s better to let this one become a streaming monster instead of a theatrical minnow.
