When you think of New York City’s wild animals, you might mostly picture pigeons and rats. But the city is also home to a large number of raccoons living in its streets and trees.
In fact, according to Wildlife NYC, raccoons are the most widespread animal in New York State. They can be found alone and in groups in forests as well as in urban and residential areas.
While experts generally don’t recommend interacting with them up close, raccoons are often seen as friendly animals and typically don’t pose a threat to humans.
One place in New York City where you’re especially likely to spot them is Central Park. According to one local man, they even have the power to make a night “a little better.”
With a packet of Sabrett hot dogs in hand, TikTok creator CJ (@cjcentralpark) walks toward a cluster of rocks.
What Did He Do With the Hot Dogs?
“Having an okay night, but trying to make it a little bit better, baby,” he says as he walks over. “So what we do is we get a package of Sabrett hot dogs, we walk over to Central Park, and we feed all the [expletive] raccoons that are over here.”
At least three raccoons can be seen among the rocks, and they immediately notice him and start walking closer to him.
He starts opening the hot dog package as more and more raccoons start to appear and wait patiently. “I love you, raccoons. I got hot dogs for you.”
He then starts throwing one hot dog after another while singing the words, “Who wants a hot dog? Who wants a hot dog? A hot dog is for you.”
The raccoons start extending their arms, picking them up, and disappearing behind the rocks with them.
“You want to have the best night of your [expletive] life, you don’t need to spend that much money in New York,” CJ says. “Just buy a pack of Sabrett hot dogs and feed the raccoons in Central Park.”
Eventually, he runs out of the sausages. “Bye, boys,” he says. “That’s all the hot dogs.”
“Feeding the trash pandas their favorite New York staple while giving them a private concert at Raccoon Rock,” CJ adds in the caption. “Honestly, the acoustics on the North End hit different on a Monday night. Sabretts for the boys, vibes for the soul.”
His video has gone viral with over 6 million views at the time of writing.
Some Commenters Find It Adorable, Others Concerning
In the comment section, reactions were split.
“‘I lovvve you raccoons, I got hot dogs for ya’ new stim unlocked,” one commenter wrote.
Others were upset that some raccoons remained sausageless.
“Not having enough dogs for all of them would in fact make my night worse,” wrote another.
“You need to go back with more,” wrote a third. CJ did go back, this time with a family pack.
Other commenters had more serious concerns. “I love the sentiment and I love raccoons, but please stop feeding wildlife,” one wrote. “It’s so dangerous for them; they become dependent on humans and stop sourcing their own food. And hot dogs are garbage food for humans, let alone for animals.”
Should You Feed Raccoons?
Unfortunately, experts advise against it.
According to the New York City government website NYC 311, residents shouldn’t feed raccoons because it can turn them into a nuisance around homes and public spaces.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has also called feeding raccoons “unwise” for similar reasons.
National Geographic reiterates this point, adding that interfering with raccoons’ natural feeding habits can disrupt their survival instincts. Animals that become used to being fed by humans may start approaching people more often, and that friendliness can sometimes turn aggressive, especially around small children.
