Fans aren’t the only ones being put through the emotional ringer by the new HBO series The Last of Us, as the actors making the show felt its emotional weight, too.

During a recent interview with Variety, Jasmila Žbanić — who directed “Kin”, the sixth episode of the acclaimed post-apocalyptic series — revealed that series star Pedro Pascal simply could not stop crying while shooting the emotional conversation between Joel and his brother Tommy.

“It’s a very emotional scene for Pedro. I was filming him as a second; first we filmed Gabriel, and then I noticed that each time we repeated, Pedro was crying,” Žbanić said.

“He was not on camera, but he was crying because he was giving his partner everything so that he can act.”

Based on the beloved video game of the same name, The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller, Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, and various guest stars such as Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, and Melanie Lynskey.

Episode seven of season one will air on Sunday, February 26 at 9 p.m. EST. The first season is scheduled to conclude with its ninth episode, directed by Ali Abbasi, on Sunday, March 12. HBO has already renewed the series for a second season, which will be based on the 2020 game The Last of Us: Part Two.

In addition to The Last of Us, Pascal will also be seen starring in The Mandalorian this Spring, which will premiere its third season on Disney+ on Wednesday, March 1.
