Priscilla Block is not a secret at this point in her country music career. However, the 29-year-old’s vocals are flying way under the radar as someone who does not get the respect that she deserves.
I am one of the people who previously slept on her talent. I’m not the target demographic for her music so she is not often included in my playlists. I was not waiting in line to get tickets to her concert.
With that being said, I have actually seen Priscilla Block perform live on two different occasions and had a good time both times. ‘Just About Over You,’ ‘He’s My Man,’ ‘My Bar’ and ‘Good On You’ are good songs. She puts on a very fun show, signature safety vest and all.
Still, though, it was not my cup of tea. I was not necessarily blown away by her vocals compared to other female artists in Nashville, some of her songs are too algorithmic for my liking and the whole Block Party thing is just not for me.
To be fair, I don’t think it is supposed to be for me. I can recognize that her music is not made to hit home with men in their mid-to-late 20s. That’s okay! People love Block and for good reason. She’s a cool dude.
I can also recognize when I am wrong. And, hand up, I was very wrong!!
Priscilla Block recently posted a video from soundcheck that made me completely change my tune, pun intended. It was a full 180º. Her raw vocals are so much better than I ever realized, to the point that I have listened to this singular three-minute and 30-second mashup on repeat over the last few days.
Block (and her band!) combined three of the biggest hits in the world right now into a country banger: ‘Birds of a Feather’ by Billie Eilish, ‘Please, Please Please’ by Sabrina Carpenter and ‘That’s So True’ by Gracie Abrams. It’s fantastic. Take a listen:
I don’t know what it is but the “so cooOOOOooooOOOOoolll” at the 2:40-mark really tickles something in my brain. She sounds great.
In the words of Shaquille O’Neal… Priscilla Block, I owe you an apology. I wasn’t really familiar with your game.
As someone who was previously indifferent to her music, this singular mashup has made me a fan for life. It is my hope that we will one day get to hear more of this side of her voice because she can really sing. Strip it down vocally and let it rip!
