A man is going viral on TikTok after revealing the bizarre situation his friend found when he walked outside. The shingles from his roof had been stolen.
Mike Pavliukov (@mikesfun42) posted the clip in October. He began filming right as his friend realized something was very wrong.
“I’m so shocked, dude,” his friend says as they stand in front of the house, staring up at the stripped roof.
Pavliukov cuts in with the obvious summary of the moment. “Someone just stole his roof shingles,” he says.
The video then jumps to two quick follow-ups—police cars pulling up to take the report and, later, his friend apparently reinstalling the shingles himself. Why he ended up handling the repairs alone, instead of going through insurance or getting outside help, isn’t explained.
As of Wednesday, Pavliukov’s clip had pulled in more than 182,600 views.
In the comments section of his video, Pavliukov didn’t offer a full-throated explanation for what happened to his friend but did fill in some of the gaps.
For one, he suggested that an unnamed roofing company was responsible for tinkering with his friend’s house but didn’t explain why they messed with it in the first place.
“The company that did it and left denied it, then they found out we have video evidence, so they started freaking out,” Pavliukov responded to one commenter. And while that doesn’t immediately answer the question of how his friend ended up with no roof or why he had to do the re-roofing work himself, this might be a good time to get into what to do if this unfortunate incident happens to you.
Are My Roof Shingles At Risk Of Getting Stolen?
According to one blogger, some roofing parts are a hot commodity for thieves. And if your roof shingles suddenly go missing, you need to act fast. Exposed patches leave your home open to leaks, mold, and more expensive structural damage down the line.
So, after calling the police, your next best bet may be to protect the area, as Pavliukov’s friend did. Cover the missing section with a heavy-duty tarp as soon as you can, and keep every receipt for temporary repairs since your insurer may reimburse you.
After everything has been documented, you should also report the theft. Shingle stealing is more common than people think, especially during busy roofing seasons, and a police report can help establish what happened.
Then, call your insurer to walk through what your policy covers. Look for language about structure coverage, and note your deductible. An adjuster may need to inspect the damage, which is standard.
It’s also worth thinking about how to prevent this from happening. A basic home security system or outdoor cameras can deter thieves or at least notify them. And if you’re planning a roof replacement, ask your installer whether materials can be dropped off the same day the work begins so they aren’t left sitting out overnight.
Your shingles are not likely to be stolen, but it does happen. That said, knowing what to do makes the whole process far less chaotic.
Viewers Can’t Believe What They’re Seeing
People flooding Pavliukov’s comments had plenty to say about the clip, and most couldn’t wrap their heads around how you even begin to explain this kind of emergency call.
“I beg your pardon, stole a roof!?” one quipped.
“I just know the police were like, they stole WHAT,” another joked.
“That call to 911 must be a bit awkward, trying to explain your roof is gone,” a third pointed out.
“Well That’s A New One!” a fourth chimed in.
Some viewers tried to piece together who might’ve taken the shingles, with several wondering if a roofing crew somehow botched the job.
Pavliukov hinted at that possibility in the comments, though nothing has been confirmed.
“Roofing crew made an error and apparently got away with it,” one woman guessed. “Hopefully, a neighbor has a ring camera.”
“The roofer is liable, mistake or not,” another argued.
“Roofing crew did the wrong house and realized it before they got the shingles on lmao I would go to whoever got a new roof close by,” a third suggested.
Others floated a different theory entirely and questioned whether the roof had been repossessed.
“Was it repossessed?” one person asked.
“Bro missed one payment & they weren’t playin,” another quipped.
