Ryan Gosling Could Potentially Save The ‘Star Wars’ Franchise Based On Reports About His Performances In ‘Project Hail Mary’ And ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’

The first reactions to Ryan Gosling’s latest movie Project Hail Mary have hit social media, with many of them promising one of the best movie theater experiences of the year. Virtually all of the initial reviews are hailing the performance of Gosling, as well

Project Hail Mary is based on the novel of the same name written by The Martian author Andy Weir and is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the filmmaking duo behind the two 21 Jump Street films and the Into the Spider-Verse franchise.

Since returning to starring roles in 2022 following a hiatus that began in 2018, Ryan Gosling has proven himself to be one of Hollywood’s best movie stars, with his performance in Project Hail Mary apparently being the clearest proof of that yet. This, obviously, is good news for the Star Wars franchise, as Gosling will be leading 2027’s Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars: Starfighter.

Reviews of Project Hail Mary and early reports about Star Wars: Starfighter suggest that Ryan Gosling could be the one to finally save the franchise on the big screen

“PROJECT HAIL MARY is one of the greatest space adventure films of all time. It’s gorgeous, full of heart, and Gosling is spectacular. He gave his all to this one and you’ll be in awe,” one fan tweeted.

“PROJECT HAIL MARY is truly magical, magnificent, and easily one of the best sci-fi movies of the 21st century. Full of hope, heart, and humor, it’s a beautiful story that rests squarely on Ryan Gosling’s shoulders, and he delivers on every level,” said a second.

Simultaneously, tucked into Variety‘s report about new Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro, was a tidbit about Disney execs earlier reactions to what they’ve seen from Star Wars: Starfighter, which is now reportedly internally expected to be more successful than this summer’s The Mandalorian & Grogu.

“Internally… there’s a sense that Star Wars: Starfighter, a spinoff from Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, is more likely to satisfy fans [than Mando & Grogu] when it hits theaters next spring, with sources who have seen footage praising Ryan Gosling’s performance and suggesting Levy has recaptured the franchise’s spirit of fun.”

Over his two-and-a-half decade long Hollywood career, Gosling has proven that there is virtually no type of performance that he’s able to pull off, as evidenced by his roles in films such as The Notebook, Half Nelson, Lars and the Real Girl, Crazy Stupid Love, Drive, The Place Beyond the Pines, The Big Short, The Nice Guys, La La Land, Blade Runner 2049, First Man, Barbie, and so on. In Hollywood’s current state, if there was any movie star capable of sustaining and revitalizing a franchise through his screen charm alone, it’s probably Gosling.

In addition to Gosling, Star Wars: Starfighter, set to release on May 28, 2027, will feature newcomer Flynn Gray alongside Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

Project Hail Mary, which also features Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub, will be hitting theaters on Friday, March 20. You can check out the official trailer below.
