Couple Rolls Down Window To Feed The Camel On Safari Park. Then They Learn Why That Was A Big Mistake: ‘It Started Nibbling On My Legs’

Everyone loves snacks. Perhaps it goes double for intrusively hungry dromedaries. Picture this: You’re on a nice, safe drive-through safari that gets you up close but not too personal with the animals. It’s a great way to marvel at nature’s own marvels.

But sometimes, nature looks back.

One “adventuring” couple discovered, to their dismay, that a window isn’t a boundary when it’s down. Especially when you’ve got a wealth of carrots to share. TikToker @whatsssophfunny posted a TikTok video illustrating that, sometimes, the safari goes sideways when the camel gets up close and personal.

How Big Is A Camel’s Head?

Recorded from the passenger seat, the view is slightly hilarious and slightly scary. Camels are huge, with heads the size of Yeti Coolers and teeth as big as dominoes. And they’re pushy, even if it’s just for carrot sticks. As the couple learned to the decimation of their carrot supply.

Under the in-video text that says, “POV: Your man wanted to feed the camel,” the man rolls down his window and entices the camel to come over to his car. “Hey, hey, c’mere,” he says in a high, sing-songy voice.

The camel complies, eagerly taking a treat from his hand, then, realizing there’s more, it sticks its head all the way in the car’s open window. The result: shouts of initial delight, and then concern. The animal has realized that there’s an entire supply of carrots in the passenger’s seat.

The TikToker shrieks as the camel refuses to leave the vehicle. According to the caption, the “greedy a– camel” ate all of the food they had in the car. Indeed, the animal refuses to leave the car and is unfazed by the shouting. The camel attempts to push its head back out the window. Instead, at one point, it’s licking the center console. Then it goes for the TikToker’s iPhone. She yanks it back before it gets slobbered to death.

But perhaps the unexpectedly funniest part? When the buffalo pops up on the passenger side, calmly nosing the window like, “Where’s my snack?”

What Would You Do?

With 1.5 million views, the internet is laughing. Mostly because it’s happening to someone else. “This is only funny cause it’s not me,” TikToker @mackie.tone says.

Another viewer, @nellietho, wants to know, “Why he mad like it wasn’t his idea?” She’s referring to the driver who clearly invites the camel in.

But there’s also a surprising fan club that emerges: everyone cheering for the guest who pops up at the end. “The way the buffalo came out of nowhere,” a third viewer said.

Planning A Safari

So, you want to get up close and personal with some wild animals. How do you plan for it? First off, know you’re going to start early because most animals are active at dawn and dusk. And know that no two animal drives are going to be the same, says safari aficionado Amanda Williams. Also, wear comfortable, sun-protective clothing. Dress in layers, and pack an excellent zoom lens.

While African safaris are the bucket-list version, in America, wildlife safaris range from mountain adventures to Disney versions. Then there are the rescues like the Catty Shack Ranch that people can visit.

Of course, any discussion of safaris touches on ideas of conservation and protection. According to the World Wildlife Fund, since 1970, there’s been an “average decline of 73% in wildlife populations.” However, that same foundation reports that there have been successful efforts to repopulate Africa’s black rhinos and also save Asian tigers.

The natural world matters because “biodiversity forms the web of life that we depend on [and] over half of global GDP is dependent on nature.” But on a more individual level, time in nature has been shown to lower cortisol levels, blood pressure, and pulse rate.

Perhaps famed natural historian David Attenborough explains this lasting fascination with the wild world. “I know of no pleasure deeper than that which comes from contemplating the natural world and trying to understand it,” he once said.

Complete with comically intrusive camels and nosy buffalo.
