Oscar-winning writer and director Martin McDonagh is set to return this year with Wild Horse Nine, his first movie since 2022’s The Banshees of Inisherin. Wild Horse Nine will see the acclaimed playwright and filmmaker reunite with Sam Rockwell, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in McDonagh’s 2017 Best Picture-winning movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Speaking to Sam Rockwell ahead of the release of his latest film, Gore Verbinski’s sci-fi romp Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, the Oscar winner teased his upcoming role in Wild Horse Nine — it’s a “buddy comedy” between him and John Malkovich — and revealed that he and fellow The White Lotus season 3 alum Parker Posey will be playing husband and wife in the film.
Both Rockwell and Posey put forth scene-stealing performances in the Thailand-set third season of the hit HBO anthology series The White Lotus, which aired on the network last year.
Sam Rockwell confirms that he and Parker Posey are playing husband and wife in Martin McDonagh’s upcoming movie Wild Horse Nine
“It’s got some political stuff — Chile, [Chilean military officer, politician and dictator Augusto] Pinochet. It’s also just a buddy movie between these two guys — me and John Malkovich. Steve Buscemi’s in it. Parker Posey. Amazing Chilean actresses… [Me and Posey] shot that after White Lotus, we play husband and wife in Wild Horse Nine,” Rockwell told BroBible.
As we discussed with Rockwell, production on Wild Horse Nine is finished (filming wrapped in April 2025), meaning the project will likely release this fall as an award season contender given McDonagh’s history at the Oscars.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die — which also co-stars Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Peña, Zazie Beetz, Asim Chaudhry, Tom Taylor, and Juno Temple — will be released in movie theaters on Friday, February 13. You can check out our full interview with Sam Rockwell below.
