Sydney Sweeney’s status as a movie star is in major trouble, as her boxing drama Christy has proven to be a historic bomb at the box office.
According to reports, Christy made just $1.3 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, which is a top 10 all-time worst debut for a movie that opened in over 2,000 theaters.

With $1.3 million in sales across over 2,000 theaters, Christy made about $646 per theater. With the average movie ticket costing about $15, that’s just 43 tickets per theater that were sold during the film’s debut weekend. Yikes.
As far as the role earning Sydney Sweeney an Oscar nomination, while it was up for discussion prior to the film’s release, the movie’s performance and Sweeney’s recent controversies have likely dented that prospect.

Sweeney’s issue is that the subset of popular culture that she seems to be pandering to recently isn’t the type of demographic to engage with any of her “content” outside of smashing the like button her thirst trap Instagram photos, thus explaining why her last three films — Eden, Americana and Christy — will likely making less than $5 million at the global box office.
In December, Sweeney will be starring in her fifth film of the year (third theatrical release) when she stars alongside Amanda Seyfried in the Paul Feig directed adaptation of the popular thriller novel The Housemaid.
The Housemaid will be hitting theaters on Christmas Day and is Sweeney’s most mainstream release of the year, by far. If that movie isn’t a reasonable hit, her future as a top-of-the-poster movie star could be in serious trouble, as it doesn’t take long for new talent to arise in Hollywood, especially young, blonde, beautiful ones, which currently represents a major portion of Sweeney’s broad appeal while her filmography continues to lag.
