Sydney Sweeney has taken to social media to provide a statement on her new boxing drama Christy imploding at the box office, as the film had one of the Top 10 worst debut weekends for a movie that opened in over 2,000 theaters.

Despite Sydney Sweeney being able to dominate headlines and social media, that hasn’t been the case with the box office, as Christy is now her third massive bomb in a row following Eden and Americana, and her biggest yet.

According to reports, Christy made just $1.3 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. With $1.3 million in sales across over 2,000 theaters, Christy made about $646 per theater.

Sweeney and her PR team are trying to spin the narrative, however, and are now championing the project as one of passion and independent cinema.

Sydney Sweeney releases lengthy statement on Instagram following the box office bomb of her new movie Christy

“I am so deeply proud of this movie. Proud of the film david made. Proud of the story we told. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. This experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Sweeney wrote on Instagram.

“This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. Through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives,” she continued.

“Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. so yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life. Thank you Christy. I love you.” the post concluded.

Sweeney’s statement is similar to an email we receieved from a PR firm representing the actress which asked us to change our headline about the box office failure of Christy to mention its “Popcornmeter score.”

“Would you please mind updating the headline for us to say that despite low box office, the audience has spoken! We are 99% positive on the Popcornmeter! Box office aside, this one’s a win in all the ways that matter. We’re so proud to back independent cinema and share a story that genuinely deserves to be seen!” the email reads.

Sweeney will look to cap off a difficult year at the box office with the release of the Paul Feig directed thriller The Housemaid, which hits theaters on December 25.
