In case you were wondering what audience the upcoming Sydney Sweeney boxing biopic Christy is trying to draw to the theaters, look no further than her recent apperance on New York sports talk radio station WFAN to promote the film.

In her new film Christy, Sydney Sweeney portrays female boxer Christy Martin, which marks a massive departure from her previous roles given its physical nature.

While appearing for an interview on the New York City radio station WFAN, Sweeney discussed committing to the realism of the film, revealing that she and her scene partners were really connecting on punches.

Sydney Sweeney discusses getting a concussion while filming Christy during an interview on NYC sports talk station WFAN

“So this is the crazy thing — we actually did connect [land punches] in the fights on the movie. One of the first things I talked to was my fight coordinator Walt and all of my stunt girls — and some of my girls were actual fighters — and I was like, ‘Hit me. I want you to hit me and I want to connect,'” Sweeney explained.

“There’s so much of Christy that comes to life in these scenes of her in the ring, I was like, ‘I don’t want it to be the back of my head because it’s a stunt double,’ or, ‘I don’t want to have to be cutting the scene to be super choppy,’ because you don’t get to see Christy’s personality shine, you don’t get to see the emotional change happening to her during these fights. So when you see us hitting each other, we’re actually connecting. There’s bloody noises, I got a concussion, it was full force.”

In addition to Sweeney, Christy also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad L. Coleman, and Tony Cavalero.

The movie is directed by Australian filmmaker David Michôd, who has also directed the Netflix-produced movies War Machine and The King.
