Sydney Sweeney is in talks to star in the upcoming film adaptation of the Japanese media franchise Gundam. A role in Gundam would mark Sweeney’s first foray into major franchise filmmaking (while she did star in Madame Web, that never had the chance of becoming a franchise).
According to reports, Sydney Sweeney — who already has three films set to release this year in Echo Valley, The Housemaid, and a Christy Martin biopic — is in ‘final talks’ to star in the Gundam, which will be written and directed by Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle.
The Gundam film has been at the works at Legendary, the studio behind the Godzilla vs. Kong franchise, since 2021. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who helmed Kong: Skull Island, was originally tapped as the project’s director but was eventually replaced by Mickle.
“The Japanese military science fiction media franchise Gundam first launched in 1979 as a TV series from Yoshiyuki Tomino, Mobile Suit Gundam. It grew in popularity through the 1980s due to a wide array of adaptations across animated feature films, novels, manga, toys, models and video games… The original series is set in the distant future in what is known as the Universal Century, as human colonies in space fight for independence from Earth. The battles are fought largely through giant robots called Mobile Suits.” [via Variety]
In addition to the aforementioned trio of projects set to release this year, Sweeney also has the Ron Howard-directed film Eden in the hopper, as it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. Eden has not yet secured a domestic distributor, though, and thus does not have a release date.
Sweeney is also currently attached to star as Kim Novak in the film Scandalous!, which follows the love affair between Novak and Sammy Davis Jr., and is also attached to a remake of the 1960’s Jane Fonda-starring sci-fi cult classic Barbarella alongside director Edgar Wright. Sweeney will also be returning for the third and final season of HBO’s hit series Euphoria alongside fellow breakout stars Zendaya and Jacob Elordi.
