There’s very little quite as upsetting as going to grab a snack and immediately getting disgusted by the very thing you were craving. That’s exactly what happened to one Tampa woman who cut into her rotisserie chicken—allegedly from Sam’s Club—only to realize the inside looked pretty unappetizing.
“Um, hey chat… wtf is that in my Sam’s Rotisserie???” TikTok creator Tiera Marzella (@marzella.ink) wrote in her video’s text overlay.
In the clip, green-colored meat can be seen running through the chicken as she lifts the flesh with a fork.
“I just wanted a little snack… wtf is that?” Marzella added in the caption, tagging Sam’s Club directly and warning, “Check your chickens.”
Her video went viral with over 1.4 million views.
What Could This Be?
While it’s hard to say with certainty what Marzella came across, she isn’t the first to cut into a chicken and see green meat inside.
According to multiple reports online, this is likely pectoral myopathy, also known as “green muscle disease.”
As per the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the condition occurs when chickens are bred for larger breast muscles, which can outgrow their blood supply. This leads to muscle death, often worsened by wing flapping during handling. It typically isn’t noticeable until the bird is cooked and cut open.
It looks off-putting, but experts say it’s not dangerous. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also notes that “none of the stages of ischemic myopathy present a food safety hazard to the consumers.”
How To Handle Chicken Safely
Even if this specific condition doesn’t pose a safety risk, handling chicken incorrectly commonly causes food-borne illness.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has specific recommendations on how to handle raw poultry, among them:
- Keeping raw poultry separate from other foods
- Washing your hands and any surfaces it touches with hot soapy water
- Cooking it to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Additionally, it recommends refrigerating leftovers within two hours.
@marzella.ink I just wanted a little snack 🤮 wtf is that @Sam’s Club ? Check your chickens
Commenters Are Grossed Out
In the comments, some users speculated on what she’d found. Others just cracked jokes.
“As a former chicken plant worker, cancer or an infected cyst. Since it’s green after cooking, probably cancer,” one person wrote.
“That chicken was sick,” another said.
Others tried to keep things light. “Dubai chocolate chicken,” one joked. Another wrote, “It’s free shavacado.”
“I fear this would make me become a vegan,” someone added.
