A new King Kong game is being called the worst game of 2023 — which has actually been a famously excellent year for video games — after clips from the project have gone viral.

Titled Skull Island: Rise of Kong, while the game was released just this week, it looks as though it’s about 25 years old, both during cut scenes and during actual gameplay.

One video posted to Twitter sharing a terrible cut scene from the game has gone massively viral as it currently has over 28 million views.

Skull Island: Rise of Kong was developed by IguanaBee, a Chile-based gaming studio that has produced titles such as G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout and Headsnatchers. It’s also published by GameMill Entertainment, the company behind Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

Here is the synopsis of Skull Island: Rise of Kong that was attached to the official launch trailer:

Skull Island: Rise of Kong is a third-person action-adventure exploration game developed by IguanaBee. Players will be taken on a quest to avenge the death of King Kong’s brother at the hands of Gaw, the alpha predator. Fight waves of primal beasts and defeat the minions of your arch-nemesis as King Kong himself. Explore the island and uncover secrets scattered throughout the land.

On the game’s official Steam page, IguanaBee says Skull Island: Rise of Kong allows players to “embark on a 3rd person action-adventure quest to avenge the death of your parents at the hands of the ultimate alpha predator, conquer waves of primal beasts and defeat the minions of your arch-nemesis on your way to becoming the rightful King of Skull Island, and traverse the mysterious island and uncover lore and all the secrets the island has to offer as you encounter swamps, waterfalls, jungle, and skullite-filled caves that give the island’s flora and fauna its power.”

Given the videos that have been circulating social media in recent days, however, that description seems to be a bit embellished, to say the least.

You can check out the official trailer for Skull Island: Rise of Kong below. As for the iconic building-sized ape’s adventures on the big screen, he’ll next be seen starring in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters next April.
