Police are looking for three thieves who were caught on camera breaking into a home and stealing a safe containing about $3.2 million in cash and jewelry. The burglars were dressed in neon construction vests when they broke into the Jamaica Hills, New York home just after 2 p.m. earlier this month.
The crooks, one wearing a face covering and eye protection, reportedly arrived in a blue Hyundai Elantra. Two of the thieves broke into the home through a back door while the third, wearing a white hoodie, black pants, black gloves and gray sneakers, backed the car into the driveway and waited.
Once inside the home, the two burglars grabbed a safe that reportedly contained cash and jewelry worth an estimated $3.2 million. The suspects then fled the scene.
Police revealed that the victim is a jeweler and was likely targeted by the thieves for that reason. The victim of the $3.2 million heist, who asked not to be identified, told WPIX News that the safe wasn’t bolted to the floor and contained mostly his daughter’s jewelry. He also said he was surprised the thieves were able to lift the safe and put it into their car.
This is the third time the victim has been targeted by robbers
This is the second time in 10 years that thieves have burglarized his home. His jewelry store in Jackson Heights was also targeted by thieves in December 2024.
In that case, three men with sledgehammers broke the glass windows of his store and walked off with $800,000 worth of merchandise. The New York Police Department reported at that time that the same burglars also tried to break into a jewelry store in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. No arrests have been made in relation to the sledgehammer bandits and police do not know if there is any connection between the suspects or the two incidents.
The suspects in this latest robbery are still on the loose, according to police. They are asking anyone with information about the thieves to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers.
