While out promoting his new film Project Hail Mary, Academy Award nominated actor Ryan Gosling detailed an on-set story from his next film, Star Wars: Starfighter. Not just any story, though, but one involving Tom Cruise flying onto set in his chopper and taking over directing duties.

According to Ryan Gosling, Hollywood legend Tom Cruise not only flew his helicopter into the middle of the set one day, but he also shot an action scene, too. Unfortunately for Gosling, however, this all happened on his day off.

Ryan Gosling revealed that Tom Cruise flew his helicopter onto the set of Star Wars: Starfighter and took over directing an action scene

“Tom Cruise flew his helicopter onto set. And they were just shooting, and they heard a helicopter, they had to cut… and it was Tom Cruise. He lands in the middle of set, he takes a camera and just starts shooting an action scene,” Gosling explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“I wasn’t there .. [my] one day off. Shawn sends me a picture of him and Tom Cruise … there’s like a shot of him in the mud shooting Flynn … I don’t know why he waited until the one day I wasn’t there. I hope that was an accident.”

In addition to Gosling in the lead role, Star Wars: Starfighter — scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027 — is also set to star newcomer Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

The next Star Wars movie, though — and the first since 2019’s disastrous Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — will be The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will be released on May 22. Based on the trailers for the film, however, excitement for the project from Star Wars fans seems to be pretty tempered.
