While the general concept of the “movie star” is largely considered to be dying thanks to the importance placed on franchises and IP, there are still a handful of actors and actresses that put butts in seats.
According to a recent report from Puck News, the top ten movie stars that draw people to movie theaters are, in order: Tom Cruise, Dwayne Johnson, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, and Kevin Hart.
Of the litany of takeaways from this list, the most obvious is that not a single one of them is younger than 40 years old, with Hart — clearly the biggest outlier on this list as its traditionally only comedic actor — being the youngest at 43.
It’s also strange to see the likes of Johnny Depp still on there, as he hasn’t starred in a major studio film since 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which was largely disliked despite making over $650 million at the global box office.
The study compiled a list of 20 movie stars, with the other 10 being Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Adam Sandler, Harrison Ford, George Clooney, Robert Downey, Jr., Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, and Chris Hemsworth.
Of the Top 20, only Hemsworth is younger than 40 years old. However, not only is the Thor star crossing that milestone in August, but he’ll always be stepping away from acting for an undetermined amount of time due to finding out that he’s got a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease.
Similarly, the report also details the actor younger than 40 years old that audiences will go to theaters for, with that list being headlined by Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence, Tom Holland, Michael B. Jordan, Zendaya, Scarlett Johansson, Jenna Ortega, Margot Robbie, Henry Cavill, Emma Watson, Gal Gadot, and Timothee Chalamet.
What stands out about the sub-40 list is how much more represented actresses are, as they make up seven of the top 12.
