A Florida woman restocked her fridge after a trip to Walmart. However, she noticed something strange when she opened a bag of Great Value shredded cheese to make nachos.
TikToker Rachel (@gettheteahawt) stands in front of her kitchen counter, frustrated after opening the 2-pound bag of Great Value cheese.
“Walmart is trying to poison us,” she laments in the clip with 61,000 views and 1,600 likes.
She explains that she purchased the cheese the day. At first glance, the cheese looked normal. However, as she sifts through the cheese in the clip, she reveals a large, moldy block of cheese.
“So much for making nachos and having taco salad tonight,” Rachel says at the end of the clip.
Is Mold On Cheese Normal?
With some cheeses like brie, blue cheese, and camembert intentionally created with mold, it can be confusing to figure out when mold should or shouldn’t be on your cheese.
According to the Mayo Clinic, mold has a hard time traveling through semi-soft cheese, such as cheddar. Therefore, it can be removed or cut off without sacrificing the non-molded part of the cheese. Shoppers should discard most soft cheeses contaminated with mold.
However, shredded cheese—regardless of type—should be tossed if moldy, as it can be hard to sift through and remove all contaminated pieces.
Rachel says she tossed the moldy shredded cheese and did not repurchase it in time to finish her nachos and taco salad.
How Did Viewers Respond To The Moldy Walmart Cheese?
Rachel says she turned off the comments on her initial post due to pervasive hate comments regarding her appearance or her reaction to the moldy cheese.
“God forbid I complain about an item that I purchased that is contaminated,” she says in a follow-up video. Rachel explains that she was already almost done with dinner and suffers from chronic pain, which made her reluctant to go back to Walmart.
She addresses suggestions that she buy a block of cheese instead of pre-shredded, holding up a new cheese grater.
At the end of the clip, she shares that she has previously unknowingly purchased other moldy items from Walmart, such as bread and fruit.
“I’m just getting to the point where shopping at Walmart is just more of an inconvenience,” Rachel says.
In the comments, many viewers agree with her reaction to the molded Great Value cheese.
“Girl- it was nasty as hell. And who the hell wants a big a– chunk of mold in the big a– bag of expensive as hell cheese! I do shred my own cheese bc that’s a fear of mine,” one wrote.
Another said, “Ummm who wouldn’t complain about that??? That’s ridiculous. & Do people seriously just remove it and eat it???? Ew.”
