A month before the recession officially began in 2007, the Westin New York at Times Square introduced a $1,000 bagel covered in gold leaf, because there are some things you just can’t make up. The item was only on the menu for a month, but for the next decade, visitors consistently inquired about it— a sentence that pains me to write.
With the Dow at an all-time high, it might seem like a questionable time to reintroduce the bagel, but potential financial doom hasn’t stopped the Westin from bringing it back for one more run.

NBC4 explained what makes the bagel so special:
The bagel, from New Yorker Bagels, will be dressed in Alba white truffle cream cheese, topped with goji berry-infused Riesling jelly and flaked with golden leaves.
White truffles are some of the rarest (and, in turn, most expensive) foods in the world. They can only be harvested by teams of dogs and pigs that are tasked with scouring the woods of northern Italy during certain months of the year.
I think we can all admit you have to be kind of a terrible person to spend this much money on a bagel, but you can eat without a guilty conscious knowing all proceeds are going to benefit the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. They’re going to need all the help they can get when the stock market crashes.
