Jerry Seinfeld Says This Was The Best Joke He Ever Came Up With For ‘Seinfeld’ And It Wasn’t Supposed To Happen

There are 180 episodes of Seinfeld, over nine seasons that finally ended in 1998. There were so many incredibly funny moments from the show, but Jerry Seinfeld has one scene that is his favorite.

In a June, Seinfeld did a Reddit AMA and was asked, “Do you have a joke that you’re the most proud of because you invented it?”

Here’s what Seinfeld had to say:

I think the best Seinfeld episode idea I ever contributed was that George pretending to be a marine biologist would find Kramer’s golf ball in the blowhole of the whale. Believe it or not, we were doing both of those stories without seeing any connection that Kramer was gonna hit golf balls at the beach, and George was gonna be pretending to be a marine biologist. And it was in the middle of the week that it suddenly hit me of a way to connect the two stories. So, I think that’s probably the best joke I ever thought of on the series. But, I love when people say “regift” or “giddyup”, or “yada yadda.” The real and spectacular…I was a very big fan of the show.

Jason Alexander says the marine biologist coffee episode was supposed to end with him walking into the ocean, but the audience weren’t blown away by the ending. So Larry David and his writers got together and two minutes later had a new ending/ David asked Alexander how long it would take for him to memorize a page of dialogue and he said, “10 minutes.” Alexander nailed the “sea was angry that day, my friends – like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli” rant in one take. Amazing.
