Elon Musk has been absolutely dominating the news lately. Last week, he launched a car into space while successfully firing launching and landing the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Prior to that, Musk went viral for selling a flamethrower online to raise money for one of his earliest endeavors, The Boring Company.
Those flamethrowers sold for $500 a pop and sold out after a few days. After selling 7,000 flamethrowers from The Boring Company, some with a $30 fire extinguisher add-on, Elon Musk made roughly $3.5 million in just a few days. Everyone was super amped on this mainstream flamethrower, so stoked that most people didn’t stop to see if they could (1) buy a cheaper version online (you can) and (2) many didn’t look into what it would cost to build their own flamethrowers.
The dude who runs the So I Had This Idea… YouTube channel realized he could make an exact replica of The Boring Company’s flamethrower so he did exactly that, made a video, and put a list of all the materials (links to buy those materials below) needed in the video so you can make one yourself:

So, what does it take to build a flamethrower of your own? You’ll need to start with an Airsoft Gun Model no. 1508, a propane torch with pushbutton ignitor, extension hose, and a water bottle holder. You can find links to the exact products this guy used down in the description of the YouTube video. In total, you’ll only spend $217.73 building your own exact replica instead of the $500 it would’ve cost you to purchase one from Elon Musk.
