Nike
I might be excited for March Madness to get going, but it doesn’t match my level of excitement for the start of the baseball season. It’s been one of my favorite times of the year since I was a little kid: baseball starting, the weather getting warmer, school almost over, my birthday in April…what more could a kid want? How about a pair of iconic kicks from “The Kid” himself, Ken Griffey, Jr.? The Air Griffey Max 1s are back at Nike in the original colors, and they’ll be gone faster than a Griffey home run.

Growing up a Yankees fan, I always had a handful of players that I loved that I wished would play for us, and Griffey was usually at the top of the list. Of course, I found out later that he explicitly said he never wanted to play there because of how his father was treated (thanks a lot, Steinbrenner), but he was one of the first guys that I looked up to as a little kid who made baseball so special.
The perfect swing. The command of center field. The backwards hat. The charisma that comes with having “it.” It’s a shame that injuries dampened the second half of his career in Cincinnati, but his Seattle years were undeniably magical.
That magic really comes through in the Air Griffey Max 1s. It’s a shoe that just absolutely pops with a 90s flair that’s hard to replicate these days. Makes me want to buy some Big League Chew and watch old World Series tapes.
