You know how before every movie they flash that message asking everyone to turn off their phones so as to not ruin the movie experience? Yeah, well to hell with that if AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron does what he is suggesting.
Because he thinks that millennials can’t be without their phones turned on for just a couple of hours he says he is considering allowing texting in certain cinemas.
From an interview Aron did with Variety…
Would appealing to millennials involve allowing texting or cellphone use?
Yes. When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don’t ruin the movie, they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow. You can’t tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That’s not how they live their life.
At the same time, though, we’re going to have to figure out a way to do it that doesn’t disturb today’s audiences. There’s a reason there are ads up there saying turn off your phone, because today’s moviegoer doesn’t want somebody sitting next to them texting or having their phone on.
Would you have a certain section for texting?
That’s one possibility. What may be more likely is we take specific auditoriums and make them more texting friendly.
Naturally, people lost their minds over this possible development so Aron was quick to try to cover his ass on Twitter…
If ever, we only would pursue in a way that we can be totally confident ALL our guests will fully enjoy the moviegoing experience at AMC 2/2

People on Twitter in response to his tweet somehow managed to make some rare, very salient points as to why millennials might not be going to theaters and it has nothing to do with the inability to text.
@CEOAdam This is a stupid idea. If you want to attract millennials stop charging so much for the tickets and concessions.

@CEOAdam we don't go to a movie theater to talk and hang out. it's way to expensive to do that.

So all in all it was quite a day for Aron. He somehow managed to piss off both millennials as well as non-millennials in one fell swoop. Solid work.
