8 Records Caitlin Clark Has Broken (So Far) During Her Unreal WNBA Rookie Season

It was kind of hard to imagine Caitlin Clark was going to be able to live up to the unprecedented amount of hype that surrounded her when she headed to the WNBA after wrapping up her time at Iowa, but as she nears the end of her first season as a member of the Indiana Fever, it’s safe to say she did exactly that.

A number of WNBA veterans suggested the former Hawkeye would have trouble adjusting to the next level after routinely wiping the floor with her competition in college, but that hasn’t really been the case. There is still definitely some room for improvement, but when you consider she was one of the best players as a rookie, that reality should really just strike fear into the rest of the league.

The Indiana Fever still have a few games left on their schedule until they turn their attention to the playoffs, and there’s a chance Caitlin Clark manages to figure out a way to break even more records than she already has this season.

However, she’ll still have plenty to brag about if that doesn’t end up being the case based on what she’s already been able to achieve during a season where she’ll undoubtedly secure Rookie of the Year honors when the awards are handed out.

Most Assists By A Rookie

In 1998, Ticha Penicheiro set the WNBA record for assists by a rookie with 225, and no one came close to sniffing that total in the 25 years that followed.

That all changed when Caitlin Clark arrived, as she’s not only shattered that mark with the 306 dimes she’s dished out during the 2024 season so far but is on pace to break the all-time record of 316 Alyssa Thomas set last year.

Single-Game Record For Most Assists By Any Player

Penicheiro also set the record for the most assists any WNBA player has recorded in a single game with 16 in 1998, and it stood for over 20 years before Courtney Vandersloot managed to post 18 in 2020.

Fans didn’t have to wait more than two decades for another player to surpass her, as Clark hooked up her teammates on 19 occasions in a losing effort against Dallas on July 17th.

That wasn’t the only WNBA record Clark was able to set in that game, as she scored 24 points on her own while directly factoring into the 42 her teammates posted after she dished the ball to them while contributing to a grand total of 66.

In doing so, she surpassed the 65 points Diana Taurasi had a role in during a game in 2006.

Most Three-Pointers By A Rookie

Clark’s ability to pull up from way behind the arc was one of the most electric aspects of her game when she was in college, and she easily picked up where she left off after making the leap to the WNBA.

Rhyne Howard set the mark to beat when she drilled 85 treys as a rookie in 2022, but Clark was able to top it before the end of August and is currently firmly atop the list with 111 (she still has an outside chance to break Sabrina Ionescu all-time single-season record of 128).

Her performance also led to her setting the franchise record for the Fever in the same category.

On September 8th, Clark drilled four three-pointers while scoring 26 points and leading the Fever to a 104-100 win in overtime against the Dream.

That marked the 10th game in a row where she’s managed to sink at least three buckets from deep, which is the longest streak in WNBA history and one that she has the chance to extend even more.

First WNBA Rookie To Record A Triple-Double

At first glance, Clark doesn’t seem like a top candidate to record a triple-double when you consider she’s a guard who’s not really expected to haul in a ton of rebounds.

With that said, she was able to post 17 triple-doubles during her time at Iowa, and she became the first rookie in WNBA history to record one with 19 points, 13 assists, and 12 rebounds (which also marked the first time a member of the Fever was able to check that box).

She didn’t stop there, as she became the first rookie to record multiple triple-doubles in a season with the 24-10-10 line she put up against the Sparks at the start of September.

Longest Player Of The Week Streak For A WNBA or NBA Rookie

Clark was recently named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the third time in a row (she also Player of the Month honors in August after the run kicked off) thanks to the stellar performances she’s consistently posted since the league returned from the Olympic break.

She became the first WNBA rookie in history to pull off that feat, and she has some extra bragging rights when you consider no first-year player in the NBA has ever been able to pull that off.

Most Turnovers In A Single Season

Clark’s game is still a work in progress, and nothing highlights that reality more than a record she probably wishes she hadn’t set.

Prior to the start of the 2024 season, Alyssa Thomas held the dubious record for most turnovers in a year with 137. That’s certainly not great, but it’s still much better than the 188 Clark has been responsible so far (a sum that will almost certainly surpass 200 by the time the regular season wraps up).

Turnovers sort of come with the territory when you’re passing the ball as much as she is, but there’s obviously some room for improvement on that front.
