Any time a team wins the Super Bowl, there are plenty of moves that make it possible. The Eagles have been one of the best-run teams in the NFL for quite some time now, and these ten moves played big parts in their Super Bowl LIX win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Hiring Of Howie Roseman

The Philadelphia Eagles hired Howie Roseman as an intern back in 2000. It’s safe to say that that is the best hire in franchise history. Roseman was promoted to general manager in 2010, and has ran the football operations in Philadelphia ever since, save a one-year disaster with Chip Kelly in charge. He’s the best executive in all of football, and is responsible for all of these moves.

Drafting Jalen Hurts

When the Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts with the 53rd overall pick in 2020, the idea was that he would back up Carson Wentz. Instead, they found a franchise quarterback that has become one of the league’s better players at the position. Hurts is now a Super Bowl MVP and a Philadelphia legend forever.

Drafting Lane Johnson

Lane Johnson had only been an offensive lineman for two years when the Eagles made him the fourth-overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft. It’s safe to say that’s paid off. Johnson will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and is still one of the NFL’s finest tackles at 34.

The Hiring of Vic Fangio

The Philadelphia defense fell apart in 2023, and was one of the league’s worst units by year-end. Enter Vic Fangio. Fangio, a longtime elite defensive coordinator, parted ways with the Dolphins to replace Sean Desai as the defensive coordinator in Philadelphia. By the end of this season, the Eagles had the best defense in the league.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mentioning hiring Kellen Moore to replace Brian Johnson as offensive coordinator last offseason as well.

Hiring Of Nick Sirianni

Sirianni was considered a bit of a surprise hire when Philadelphia hired him prior to the 2021 season. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Sirianni in Philadelphia, as many fans wanted him fired earlier this year after a slow start and poor finish to 2023. But, in four years, he has two Super Bowl appearances and a Lombardi Trophy.

Drafting Jordan Mailata

When the Eagles used a 7th-rounder on Australian rugby player Jordan Mailata in 2018, it was a total lottery ticket. He had never played a down of football, and barely knew the rules of the game. Now, he’s an All-Pro selection and one of the most valuable left tackles in the league.

Trading For AJ Brown

Drafting DeVonta Smith and trading for AJ Brown gave the Eagles one of the best 1-2 punches of any team in the league at wide receiver. They traded the 18th-overall pick to the Tennessee Titans for Brown, and he’s improved from a solid receiver with potential to one of the very best in the NFL. He has over 4,000 yards in the regular season in three seasons in Philadelphia. tallying over 85 yards per contest.

Signing Zack Baun

Baun was a role player in New Orleans in his first four years in the NFL before signing a cheap one-year deal with the Eagles last offseason. He blossomed with Philadelphia, and was named First-Team All-Pro this year. He filled a huge hole in the defense at a level nobody could’ve predicted.

Drafting Cam Jurgens

It’s not just that they drafted center Cam Jurgens with the 51st-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The fact that Howie Roseman had the foresight to make this pick while Jason Kelce was still on the team allowed Jurgens to fill in flawlessly this year after Kelce retired following last season. Jurgens is a solid player at what could’ve been a big hole.

Signing Saquon Barkley

I don’t think anyone would argue that signing Saquon Barkley in free agency was the move that put them over the top. Everyone knew that Barkley was an insanely talented running back that had been wasted on the pitiful Giants. Maybe only those that watched him at Penn State knew that he was capable of one of the most fantastic seasons of any running back in history. Barkley carried this offense repeatedly, and finished his career with more rushing yards than any player in history, regular season and postseason combined.
