The 10 College Football Teams In The Top 25 Most Likely To Lose In Week 5

There was plenty of movement in the Top 25 after the latest slate of college football games wrapped up, and Week 5 features a ton of matchups boasting squads with numbers next to their name that have the potential to shake things up yet again when everything is said and done.

Week 5 of the college football season features four games between two teams each ranked in the Top 25 as well as a number of other contests where those going up against unranked opponents are looking at a pretty tough battle on paper.

We’ll have to wait and see how things play out, but there are a number of teams who should probably be a bit worried about their prospects.

#2 Georgia

Georgia started the season as the No. 1 team in the country but has fallen to second behind a Texas Longhorns squad that firmly deserves the top spot based on what we’ve seen so far.

The Bulldogs are obviously still a force to be reckoned with, but there was plenty of cause for concern in a showdown with Kentucky where they were able to walk away with the 13-12 win.

There are still plenty of questions surrounding Alabama, but the Crimson Tide have a very good shot at pulling off the upset.

Speaking of Alabama…

The Crimson Tide are listed as 2.5-point underdogs against Georgia, and while they’ve looked pretty dominant during their 3-o start, none of the teams they’ve played are even close to the caliber of the Bulldogs.

They’ll have a friendly crowd on their side, but this is Kalen DeBoer’s first real test since taking over for Nick Saban. He’d be making a major statement with a win in the highly-anticipated SEC tilt, but it’s not going to be an easy one.

#15 Louisville

Louisville has emerged as one of the top teams in the ACC, and they’d be able to firm up that reputation with a win over #16 Notre Dame.

However, the Cardinals are listed as 6.5-point underdogs against a Fighting Irish squad with a huge chip on its shoulder following its shocking loss to NIU.

Louisville’s biggest weakness so far has been its secondary, and the team could be in for a very long day if Notre Dame is able to exploit it.

Notre Dame might be favored, but their aforementioned loss to NIU proves nothing should be taken for granted when it comes to this team.

The Fighting Irish were able to bounce back from that upset with decisive wins over Purdue and Miami of Ohio, but they’ve already shown they’re vulnerable heading into a game against their toughest opponent yet.

#19 Illinois

All of the teams mentioned so far are going up against a ranked opponent, and that’s also the case with Illinois, who will be facing off against #9 Penn State on the road.

The fact that I didn’t include the Nittany Lions on this list really tells you all you need to know about the Fighting Illini’s prospects in a showdown where they’re 18-point underdogs.

Penn State did have much more trouble than it should have against Bowling Green, but they’re still 3-0 and have a decided edge against an Illinois team that shouldn’t pose much of an issue.

#20 Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State is featured in the fourth and final matchup between two teams in the Top 25, and they’re facing an uphill battle against a Kansas State squad that’s favored by five points despite being ranked lower.

Kansas State plummeted 10 spots after a pretty embarrassing loss to BYU last week, but they’ll probably have some extra motivation to come away with the W as a result.

If the Wildcats can get their running game firing on all cylinders, the Cowboys are going to be in for a challenge.

#21 Oklahoma

Auburn hasn’t looked very impressive after getting off to a 2-2 start, but the Sooners also weren’t able to hold their own against a superior Tennessee squad while dropping to 3-1 last week.

Oklahoma is listed as a 2-point favorite, but they’re dealing with a bit of a wild card after Michael Hawkins Jr. was named the team’s starting QB due to Jackson Arnold’s struggles against the Vols.

Auburn also has home-field advantage on its side, and the Tigers have a very realistic shot at securing the win in front of a friendly crowd.

#22 BYU

BYU landed in the Top 25 with the aforementioned upset of Kansas State, but oddsmakers like Baylor in a contest where the Bears are currently 3.5-point favorites.

At this point, Baylor coach Dave Aranda needs every win he can get as the hot seat continues to warm up after a 2-2 start to the season, and he has even more motivation thanks to the manner in which his team lost to Colorado.

BYU has also struggled in day games over the past few years (17-19) compared to their impressive record (28-3) after the sun goes down, so there is cause to be concerned due to the nature of a contest that will start in Provo at 10 A.M.

#23 Kansas State

Let’s circle back to Kansas State, shall we?

The Wildcats may be favored in this Big 12 matchup, but their offense looked pretty anemic in the 35-9 loss to BYU where all of their points came from field goals.

They’ll have an advantage if their formidable rushing defense lives up to expectations, but that may not end up being the deciding factor if they can’t get things clicking on the other side of the ball.

#24 Texas A&M

Texas A&M probably should beat an Arkansas team that has managed to surpass expectations so far after getting off to a 3-1 start, but the Razorbacks are still poised to give them a run for their money.

The Aggies are listed as 4-point favorites, but their passing game is a cause for concern and their comparative prowess on the ground could encounter issues against an Arkansas defense that’s shown it can stop the run.

As is the case for Aranada, Sam Pittman is coaching for his job this season, and it’s very hard to imagine Arkansas is going to be a pushover.
