The first grander blue marlin of the year in Kona, Hawaii was just caught and landed by Captain Teddy Hoogs’ Big Game Sportfishing charters when he landed a 1,085.5-pound blue marlin on Tuesday.

This is the time of year when blue marlin fishing in Hawaii really starts to heat up with the potential for catching a grander blue marlin going up. That said, catching a ‘grander’ is typically a once-in-a-lifetime experience for even the most seasoned of captains and that rings true with this catch.

After Capt. Teddy Hoogs brought his 1081-pound blue marlin back to the docks in Kona, congratulations started pouring in from other captains in the Kona fishing community. Many of Capt. Teddy’s peers called this a “long awaited grander” as this was the first time the Big Game Sportfishing charter captain had ever landed a grander blue marlin onboard his 2008 46′ Gamefisherman, a boat that has hauled in countless blues over the years but never one weighting 1,000+ pounds until now.

1,081 Pound Blue Marlin Caught In Kona, Hawaii

Look at the shoulders on this absolute unit of a fish!

The ‘wings’ on this fish (the rigid pectoral fins) look like they’re longer than my arms. This really is an incredible fish that was landed.

Kona, Hawaii is a global hotspot for big blue marlin. The IGFA fishing world record for the biggest Pacific blue ever caught in Kona was a massive 1376-pound blue marlin caught by Jay de Beaubien all the way back in 1982. That fish was caught on May 31st which seems unseasonably early for the ‘big fish’ season in Kona, Hawaii but anything can happen that far out in the Pacific.

For context, the IGFA fishing world record for Atlantic blue marlin is slightly larger at 1402 pounds and 2 ounces, a fish caught in 1992 by angler Paulo Amorim who was fishing out of Vitoria, Brazil. And it is the might black marlin that holds the all-time weight record for marlin species. A 1,560 pound black marlin was caught out of Cabo Blanco, Peru all the way back in 1953 by angler Alfred Glassell Junior, making it the largest marlin ever caught, weighed, and certified though there are rumors of larger fish being caught.

Captain Teddy Hoogs’ 1,081 pound blue marlin is just the second ‘grander’ caught worldwide so far this year. The other 1,000+ pound blue marlin was caught in Bermuda last month and tipped the scales at 1,268 pounds, making it the third-largest blue ever caught in Bermuda.

In Hawaii, when blue marlin are kept and weighed the meat then goes to feed many locals. With 1,081 pounds of meat, this herculean fish was able to feed a LOT of people. To book a fishing charter in Kona, Hawaii with Capt. Teddy Hoogs himself you can reach out to him via TripAdvisor.
