Boone was immediately crushed for inserting Cortes, usually a starting pitcher, in a relief role vs the Dodgers in the World Series.
“Aaron Boone decided to throw Nestor Cortes who hasn’t thrown a baseball in a month over Tim Hill who had been stellar throughout the entire playoffs And people ask why fans don’t like him” commented on Yankees fan on social media.
During his postgame press conference, Boone explained his decision for putting Cortes into the game.
“Just liked the matchup,” Boone said after the game. “The reality is he’s been throwing the ball really well the last few weeks as he’s gotten ready for this. I knew with one out there, it would be tough to double up Shohei if Tim Hill gets him on the ground and then Mookie behind him is a tough matchup there. So felt convicted with Nestor in that spot.”
