On Wednesday, January 22, the New York Jets hired Aaron Glenn to be their new head coach, making the former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator the 22nd head coach in the history of the franchise. Glenn will be succeeding Robert Saleh, who was the Jets head coach from 2021 to 2024.
Aaron Glenn, a first time head coach, will certainly have his plate full as the head coach of the Jets, as the team hasn’t made the playoffs in 14 years, which is the longest postseason drought in the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL.
Glenn also has a decision to make about quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who led the team to a 5-12 record as the team’s starting QB last season while completing 63% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
According to reports in the New York media, Glenn has already let it be known that he would like to keep the 41-year-old future Hall of Fame quarterback for the 2025 season.

Glenn, a former cornerback, was drafted by the Jets in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft and was a two-time Pro Bowler with the team.
In an official statement made after he was hired, Glenn acknowledged that his history with the team played a role in his decision.
“This place is special for me. From the time I was drafted and practiced on Long Island, to the time I came back as a scout in New Jersey, this organization has always felt like home. I’m thankful to Mr. Johnson for this opportunity. To our players, prepare to be coached with everything we have. That is our responsibility. I ask that we share the same vision and that’s working towards winning a championship. To our fans, simply put, expect a winning team that you will be proud of,” Glenn said.
In addition to hiring Glenn, the Jets are also in the market for a new general, which is likely a decision that will come into place now that Glenn has been hired. The team’s choice of offensive coordinator is also going to be a key to correcting the direction of the franchise as Glenn is a defensive minded coach.
