Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels football program took a big step toward looking competent on Saturday against the Virginia Cavaliers in an ACC showdown.
No, the Tar Heels didn’t win. But UNC fought tooth and nail in a 17-16 loss to the Cavaliers, who came in at 6-1 and ranked No. 16 in the country according to the Associated Press.
And, had it not been for an extremely dubious pass interference call, North Carolina may well have walked out with the victory.
ACC Ref Facing Questions Over Curious Pass Interference Call
North Carolina defensive back Marcus Allen appeared to have intercepted UVA quarterback Chander Morris with the Cavaliers driving deep in Tar Heels territory.
However, the field judge on the play called pass interference on the play.
There are two major problems with that call. For one, the officials called pass interference against No. 15 for UNC. Allen is No. 29. In fact, there was no No. 15 on the field at the time for the Tar Heels.
But that’s not all.

A further look at the play shows the official grabbing the flag out of his pocket well before Allen came anywhere near Virginia receiver Kameron Courtney. The official seemingly throws the flag with more than three yards of separation between Allen and Courtney.
And in case you thought there may have been interference before the above video clips begin, it’s actually the closest that Allen and Courtney were throughout the entire play.
Now, bad calls happen all the time. Maybe the official thought he truly saw an infringement. But given the recent suspension of a prominent SEC official after several complaints were lodged against him, it’s easy to see why fans are skeptical of referees.
In reality, there was likely no foul play here. But it’s hard to see what happened and not at least want to ask some questions.
