The Alabama Crimson Tide took down SEC rival South Carolina in college football action over the weekend. Wide receiver Germie Bernard proved to be the hero.
The pass catcher scored two touchdowns in the final 2:16 action to give his team a 29-22 victory. The team refused to learn from past mistakes on his final play.
The Tide avoided an upset scare in Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday. Alabama was able to overcome an eight-point fourth quarter deficit with two late scores.
Bernard scored the game-tying touchdown with 2:16 left to play. After a Gamecocks turnover, he put his team ahead for good.
Germie Bernard was Alabama football’s hero.
On a third-and-10 play, the wideout took a direct snap 25 yards to the house. South Carolina let him score.

Bernard could’ve run out of bounds and effectively ended the game. South Carolina was out of timeouts. Alabama could’ve burned clock and set up for a game-winning field goal on the final play.
Kicker Conor Talty has not missed a field goal this season inside of 40 yards. Bernard had a chance to go down just before the goal line.
Instead, he chose to score. It gave the ball back to the Gamecocks with 34 seconds left to play.
It provided Alabama fans a feeling of deja vu.
Bernard almost cost the Crimson Tide in 2024.
Alabama beat South Carolina 27-25 in Tuscaloosa last year. Again, Bernard scored a late touchdown on his team’s final possession.
In that instance, the Crimson Tide led 20-19 when he caught a first down pass from Jalen Milroe. Rather than go down, he scored.
Similar to this past Saturday, the Gamecocks were out of timeouts in that 2024 matchup. Had Bernard simply given himself up, Alabama could’ve kneeled the final seconds off the clock to secure the win.
Instead, he scored. South Carolina got the ball back, drove the length of the field in a minute’s time, and scored a touchdown to potentially force overtime.
The Gamecocks were unable to get a two-point conversion, giving the Tide the win. Still, Germie Bernard gave the home fans a few extra grey hairs with his decision to find the endzone.
They tried to repeat last year. They didn’t “let” him score here but the score led to a chaotic finish. https://t.co/evO2gifBLg pic.twitter.com/djiCA81k9C

Alabama did not learn from that past mistake. It was not worried about giving the ball back to the Gamecocks with a chance to tie or win. The staff reportedly gave Bernard the “green light” to score instead of settling for the field goal.
Luckily, in both instances, the Crimson Tide came out on top. The extra possessions for South Carolina did not matter. Germie Bernard has two more touchdowns to his name because of it!
