It’s been six years since Auburn treated us to what may be the craziest play the college football world saw this decade when the Tigers managed to convert a missed field goal into a game-winning touchdown after Chris Davis went 109 yards to the house to shock top-ranked Alabama in the Iron Bowl.
On Saturday, the two teams met again in their annual rivalry game, and while the stakes may not have been as high as they were in 2013, there was still a fair amount on the line, as the Crimson Tide desperately needed a win to keep their (admittedly slim) playoff hopes alive.
It’s safe to say this year’s contest lived up to the hype surrounding it and the competing squads traded blows until Alabama found itself down by a score of 48-45 with two minutes to go and in a position to kick a field goal that would have given them a chance to send the game into overtime.
With everything on the line, Joseph Bulovas took to the field to attempt the 30-yard kick but was ultimately unsuccessful, as his try doinked off the uprights to give Auburn its second Iron Bowl victory in three years.

After taking a day to reflect upon the miss, Bulovas hopped on Twitter on Sunday night to formally apologize for letting down Alabama fans.

While it’s easy to pin the loss on the kicker, it goes without saying that Alabama made plenty of mistakes to put themselves in the situation they found themselves in, so while Bulovas’ apology may not have been necessary, you have to give him props for stepping up to shoulder some of the blame.
