Alabama fans were not kind to Conor Talty after he missed yet another field goal on Saturday. They booed their kicker both after the initial miss and when he returned to the field not too long thereafter.

The players and coaches were not thrilled.

It might be the first time in college football history that one single Crimson Tide player received thunderous boos by his lonesome (not directed at the full team) at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Talty needs to figure out his problems in a hurry.

Conor Talty missed another field goal and got booed.

Talty, a redshirt sophomore, was considered one of the top placekickers in the recruiting Class of 2023. He finally earned the starting job this season after two years as the backup.

It has not gone well.

Talty has made only 11 of his 18 field goal attempts on the season. He has four makes on five attempts between 30 and 39 yards, five makes on eight attempts between 40 and 59 yards and one miss from beyond 50 yards.

However, the biggest issue is from short distance. He has only two makes on four attempts between 20 and 29 yards. Yikes.

To make matters worse, Talty furiously blamed his long snapper for a missed field goal that cost Alabama the game against Oklahoma even though it appeared to be his own fault. Double yikes.

As a result, Crimson Tide fans were not particularly kind to Conor Talty when he missed another short kick against Eastern Illinois on Saturday. The miss did not at all factor into the final score but they booed him anyway.

They booed him again just a few minutes later when Talty returned to the field for an extra point.

I cannot say for certain, but I am pretty sure it was the first time in Alabama history that Alabama fans booed a singular Alabama athlete on his home field. The entire team and/or the entire defense/offense has been booed before, collectively, but not only one player.

Alabama players and Kalen DeBoer checked the fans.

When asked about what happened after the game, head coach Kalen DeBoer asked the fans to rally behind Conor Talty instead of turning against him. The team has his back, he said.

DeBoer actually at one point took Talty out of the game to give Peter Notaro a chance to kick. He later brought Talty back in. The logic behind the decision does make some sense but it probably did not help with the optics for a struggling kicker after he got booed. It probably didn’t help his psyche either.

Defensive back Zabien Brown also took aim at the fans who booed with a post on Instagram. They are, in his words, “lame asl.”

It will be interesting to see how DeBoer handles this situation moving forward. Alabama has one game left in the regular season. It needs to get its kicking woes figured out in a hurry or a missed field goal could be the difference between the playoff and not, or a win in the playoff and not.

Maybe the boos will lead to a change at the position. Maybe not. We’ll see.
