The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball program enters the 2026 NCAA Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region of the bracket. But the Crimson Tide’s hopes of a long run in the tournament may already be in jeopardy.
On Monday morning, Charlie Potter of On3 Sports reported that Aden Holloway, the team’s second-leading scorer, was arrested on felony charges of marijuana possession.
Initially, fans were stunned to hear that police had made an arrest and that the charges were so severe. But once details of the incident emerged, the picture became clearer.
Aden Holloway Had More Than A Pound Of Marijuana On Him At Time Of Arrest
According to the Tuscaloosa police department, the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force conducted a search of Holloway’s residence on Monday morning and found over a pound of marijuana, in addition to drug paraphernalia and cash.
Holloway was immediately arrested and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp before being taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where his bail was set at $5,000.
Police claim that the substantial amount of marijuana indicated an intent to sell, which is what led to the first-degree possession charges.
It is unclear if Holloway has been released yet on bail, but the 6-foot-1 junior, who began his career at Auburn before transferring to Alabama a year ago, is at risk of missing at least Friday’s first-round game against 13th-seeded Hofstra.
Holloway has played in 28 games this season, including 25 as a starter. He averages 16.8 points per game on 48.1 percent shooting from the field and 43.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Additionally, Alabama was 23.1 points per 100 possessions better with Holloway on the floor vs. off in SEC play this season. The Crimston Tide averaged 1.3 points per possession with Holloway on the floor, compared to just 1.12 points per possession with him off.
