Wizards 2nd-Overall Pick Alex Sarr Has Been Downright Awful In NBA Summer League

The NBA Summer League is a time where fans of all 30 NBA teams should be hopeful about their future as their best young assets take to the court in Las Vegas and show off their potential. But, Washington Wizards fans have reasons to be bearish on Alex Sarr, a player that was just drafted to be the centerpiece of the franchise.

Sarr has been terrible so far in the NBA Summer League, and his performance Tuesday will live in infamy among the all-time worst NBA Summer League performances.

The Wizards took on third-overall pick Donovan Clingan and the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night. The French big man made history, but not the kind he’d like to.  Sarr was a whopping 0-15 from the floor and missed  both of his foul shots for a total shooting night of 0-17.

How unprecedented is a shooting night that bad? ESPN claims that fifteen attempts is the most attempts without a make since at least 2017 in the NBA Summer League. If it was a regular season NBA game, it would be tied for the second most misses without a make in history. He did have 9 rebounds and 3 blocks, but you cannot go 0-15.

That’s not some aberration for Alex Sarr’s Summer League shooting so far, either.  In three games, he’s 8-41 from the floor and 2-17 from three-point range. I think everyone knew his offensive game was behind his defense, where his length and quickness will allow him to be very good pretty quickly. But, I don’t think anyone saw 8-41 coming in the Summer League.

Granted, Summer League is not always the best barometer. Spurs center Victor Wembanyama had his ups and downs last summer, and by the end of his rookie year he was one of the best players in all the NBA. But, it still has to be unsettling to see a guy taken second-overall look totally lost.

Thankfully, Bub Carrington, whom the Wizards selected 14th-overall, has looked fantastic. And, the Washington Wizards are in a total rebuild, so Alex Sarr has plenty of time to improve.
