Deshaun Watson’s Inconsistency Could Be A Factor In Amari Cooper’s Holdout

There’s no doubt that Cleveland Browns pass-catcher Amari Cooper is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. The Alabama alum has been remarkably consistent for three different teams and varying quarterback situations.

Entering his age 30 season, Cooper knows he likely only has one big contract left in him.  He hasn’t showed up to OTA’s and mini-camp this offseason in the hopes that the Browns choose to  give him a new deal.

Cooper spoke out about the situation, and had this to say, according to CBS Sports.

During an interview with Betr , a gaming company, Cooper was challenged to a foot race. While he said he would not be beat, he declined the competition for fear of getting injured and jeopardizing any future negotiations.

He noted that he could “pull a hammy or something” while running, adding, “I’m trying to get paid this year,” further proving that his absence is contract related.

There is some speculation that Amari Cooper could extend his holdout into training camp, as he really wants to get a new deal done. All players, especially those on the back half of their career want to lock in a long-term deal. But, I think it’s even more pressing for Amari Cooper, and it’s because of Deshaun Watson.

Ever since the Browns acquired the controversial quarterback prior to the 2022 season, the franchise has more-or-less put all their chips in on how well Watson plays. So far, returns haven’t been great, as he has not been the same player he was in Houston prior to his legal issues.

And, we all know how much quarterback play can influence wide receiver production, and in turn, their contract. It’s possible that Amari Cooper doesn’t trust Deshaun Watson to help him put up a truly huge year that is more than his standard 1200-yard season that could help him get a monster contract. So, why not lock in the money now and not roll the dice with an inconsistent quarterback?

It’s going to be interesting to find out if the Browns do decide to pay Amari Cooper before the season. He’s in the final year of a 5-year, $100 million deal he originally signed with the Dallas Cowboys.
