I think most golf fans would kill to get the chance to throw back some drinks with John Daly, but Andrew “Beef” Johnston shared a cautionary tale after being lucky enough to do exactly that.
There’s no shortage of incredible stories revolving around the man, myth, and legend who is John Daly, the hard-partying, chain-smoking, drive-ripping fan favorite who took the golf world by storm in the 1990s and remains one of the most beloved figures in the sport to this day.
Daly only racked up a total of five wins on the PGA Tour but has said he thinks he could’ve secured more victories if he’d been allowed to drink booze and go barefoot while competing.
He’s admitted to drinking during a tournament a single time, but the man who posts up in the parking lot of the Hooters near Augusta National whenever The Masters roll around has never been shy about throwing them back when he’s not on the course.
The 2015 Turkish Airlines Open was certainly no exception based on the story Andrew Johnston recently shared on an episode of the Life on Tour podcast, as the 35-year-old Englishman known as “Beef” relayed what went down when he got the chance to drink with Daly during that leg of the European Tour.
Johnston said Daly invited him to booze it up after the tournament came to a close before things went slightly off the rails, recalling:
“I was having a beer and he was like ‘We’ll get a bucket of these beers.’ He was obviously straight on whiskey…He ordered two large whiskies and he’s got the can of Coke on the side. As the waiter put them down, he went, ‘Can we order two more?’
Next thing, I’m in my pants and I’m shaking a tree and then I’m jumping in the pool. He seems OK. I’m not!
I wake up and I’m like, ‘What happened?’ My missus at the time was like, ‘Yeah, you threw off your pants and you were shaking this bush for some reason and jumped in the pool.’
I was like, ‘What did John do?’ He just walked to his room.”
Sounds about right.
