Anthony Kim Is Using A ‘Crackhead’ For Motivation As LIV Golf Comeback Continues To Falter

Anthony Kim hasn’t exactly dazzled since mounting a fairly unexpected comeback with LIV Golf, and he’s turning to a fairly unlikely source for motivation based on a tweet where he said he’s channeling the energy of crackhead to achieve his goals.

It’s been four months since Anthony Kim made his grand return to professional golf after spending more than a decade away from the game he abandoned in the early 2010s due to injuries following a fairly meteoric rise where he cemented himself as one of the sport’s most compelling rising stars.

It’s safe to assume LIV Golf gave Kim a pretty sizeable bag to come out of retirement at the age of 39 when you consider he likely had to forfeit the $10 million insurance payout he reportedly received after deciding to walk away from golf (although he’s implied the reality isn’t that straightforward).

While I’d like to tell you Kim has managed to shake the rust off and return to form after staging a comeback, that hasn’t been the case. He played his inaugural LIV Golf event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in March and shot +16 while finishing in 53rd place out of the 54 golfers who finished the tournament, and his track record since then looks like this:

  • Hong Kong: 50th (+3)
  • Miami: 53rd (+21)
  • Adelaide: DQed after signing an incorrect scorecard
  • Singapore: T-52nd (+6)
  • Houston: T-48th  (+4)
  • Nashville: T-46th (E)

Kim obviously has some work to do, and on Wednesday, he shed some light on how he’s staying driven while deploying an interesting analogy involving a “crakhead” [sic], saying he wants to channel the same energy a serious addict devotes to getting their fix no matter what.

Kim also included a cheeky reference to his self-admitted issues with substance abuse at the height of his fame, so while the metaphor in question might be somewhat questionable, I’d be lying if I said I don’t appreciate the sentiment.
