Antonio Pierce’s Seat Gets Hotter After Comments By Raiders Owner Mark Davis

Antonio Pierce Antonio Pierce’s first season as the full-time head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders has not gone as planned. The team is 2-11, and Pierce has made plenty of high-profile coaching mistakes.

One-and-done head coaches in the NFL are pretty rare. But, comments on Antonio Pierce’s job on Wednesday made by Mark Davis shows that Pierce may indeed be in danger of getting fired after his first full season as a head coach.

Frankly, Antonio Pierce wouldn’t have sniffed the job had players not vouched for him following his stint as interim head coach last year. He’d never even served as a coordinator at the NFL level, and only called plays as a defensive coordinator at Arizona State, a stint that ended with the program in ruins. He’s not known as some elite X’s and O’s guy or CEO-type coach, and wouldn’t have received and interview anywhere else. But, the players wanted him, and after the disastrous Josh McDaniel hire, Mark Davis wanted a coach the players wanted.

Pierce has been way over his head from the get-go. Yes, the roster is not good, and the quarterback situation is a mess. But, he’s frequently messed up game management decisions, the’re woefully underprepared each week, and he doesn’t really have any traits of a successful NFL head coach.

The former NFL linebacker would certainly like to come back for a second year. But, given these comments below by Mark Davis, that seems to be in serious doubt.

Remember, Tom Brady is now part of the Las Vegas ownership group as well, and talk is that he wants to have considerable input on big franchise decisions. It seems likely that Brady has some ideas on who the team’s head coach should be, and that the right person for the job is not Antonio Pierce.

At this point, it’s hard to see Antonio Pierce getting a second season.
