Arch Manning will be the starting quarterback for Texas during the 2025 college football season after spending two years as the backup to Quinn Ewers. The former No. 1 recruit, who carries the most famous last name in the sport, began his first spring practice as the guy on Tuesday.
He is noticeably more lean as a redshirt sophomore than he was just a year ago.
Manning, the new face of college football, completed 67.8% of his 90 pass attempts for 939 yards and nine touchdowns with two interceptions in 2024. Ewers got hurt during the early season so the highly-touted backup got the opportunity to make four starts during the early season. Steve Sarkisian also used him in situational packages as a runner, which allowed him to run for 108 yards and four touchdowns.
Last year was just a taste. This year is the start of a new era in Austin. Arch Manning will finally take over as the Longhorns’ starter for Week 1 and if his legendary grandfather has anything to say about it, he will be in that role for at least three more years. We’ll see.
In the meantime, Manning got his first snaps as QB1 when Texas got spring practice underway on Tuesday. His accuracy was the focal point, as could be expected— especially on the move and on his deep ball.
Arch Manning’s accuracy on the deep ball and on the move really stood out, as expected, but there was some first practice sloppiness towards the end of the last period the media was allowed to watch with the QBs and WRs not on the same page. pic.twitter.com/1sMcr5ztSq

There was some sloppiness at the end of the morning. Early-season disconnects between the quarterbacks and wide receivers are to be expected. But Manning was throwing lasers!

All eyes were on No. 16.

Highlights aside, the biggest takeaway from the first day back was Arch Manning’s physique.

The 6-foot-4 signal-caller was listed at 225 pounds last season. According to an updated roster provided to the media on Tuesday, he is down three pounds to 222.
That may not seem like a big deal, but it is. Fat weighs more than muscle. Manning has been in the weight room all offseason. Steve Sarkisian said back in February that nobody was working harder.

"I've recruited a lot of quarterbacks in my time… they can be difficult, they can be tough but with Arch it was so NORMAL."@TexasFootball @heykayadams @ArchManning | #HookEm pic.twitter.com/VpQkYDv7Gt
It seems like all of the work paid off. For Arch Manning to drop three pounds of fat is a good amount! He is not quite as big (three pounds lighter, to be exact) but much stronger. Look out, SEC.
