Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo became a national superstar this past college football season when he led the Sun Devils to a Big 12 championship and a spot in the College Football Player. Now Skattebo is focused on a potential pro career, spending this week in Indianapolis at the NFL Draft Combine. But while he does so, he now has a court case looming in the background.
Zach Buchanan of the Phoenix New Times reports that Skattebo has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit involving former teammate Mattheos Katergaris. Katergaris, a former walk-on, sued the Arizona Board of Regents in May over injuries he allegedly suffered in a golf cart accident after a 2023 practice.
Now Katergaris states that it was Skattebo, who allegedly improperly boarded the the golf cart, that caused the vehicle to fail and led to the wreck.
Cam Skattebo Allegedly Disobeyed Instructions Which Caused Golf Cart Failure
According to the suit, Katergaris claims that he team had been instructed “about the proper use of golf carts” and “explicitly told” that the rear seat had a limit of 600 pounds or two people. Katergaris states that Skattebo “jumped on the back of the golf cart” which was already carrying two players and later “jumped up and down on the rear bench as the golf cart traveled a considerable distance.”
The bench then failed, causing a wreck. Katergaris claims to have suffered injuries which required months of medical care. In a recent filing by representation for the Board of Regents, it allegedly “admits it has reason to believe Defendant Skattebo boarded the back of the golf cart while two other players were sitting on the rear section” and “admits that the rear bench of the golf cart broke.”
Skattebo has not spoken about the case and it is unknown whether he has yet been served as a defendant. He is set to work out Saturday at the NFL Combine with the rest of the running backs.
