Arizona lost its first women’s college basketball game of the season to West Texas A&M, a Division-II opponent. Fortunately, the result did not count against its record.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats pulled the most cowardly move on social media after the embarrassing upset loss.
They refused to post the final score of the women’s college basketball game. In fact, they did not even post an update beyond the first quarter.
Arizona women’s basketball lost to WHO?!
This is going to be a season of transition for the University of Arizona. Former head coach Adia Barnes left for the same job at SMU during the offseason after making four NCAA Tournament appearances in the last five years.
Becky Burke was hired as the successor to Barnes after four seasons at Buffalo. Her first real game against a live opponent was a complete and total disaster.
West Texas A&M competes on the Division-II level. The Lady Buffs went 19-13 last season with losses to schools like Texas A&M-Kingsville, Angelo State and Midwestern State, among others. They actually lost an exhibition game to the Wildcats in Tucson by 25 points on Oct. 25, 2024.
363 days later, West Texas A&M beat Arizona by three on its home floor in an exhibition game on Thursday night. The Lady Buffs held off the Wildcats in the closing moments.
The last shot is NO GOOD, Arizona loses 57-60 to West Texas A&M.

What could have been a crazy comeback turns into heartbreak for the ‘Cats. pic.twitter.com/FRzNyR4Lpa
As cool as it is for such a small school to pull such a big upset, this should not happen.
There is perhaps less parity in women’s college basketball than any other collegiate sport. No. 3-seed LSU beat No. 6-seed Florida State by 30 points in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year. A Division-I team should not lost to a Division-II team, ever. Not even on an off night.
And yet, here we are.
Post the score!
Barnes sees the loss as a reality check. Her team obviously has a long way to go before it can compete for a national title.

The social media team also has some work to do.
Arizona pulled the most cowardly move in sports. It refused to post the final score.
The Wildcats posted an update after the first quarter, down by nine.
That was it. They never followed up with an update at the end of the second or third quarters.
That’s fine! The lack of update after the final buzzer is not fine.
To not post the final score to avoid getting clowned is a cardinal sin on social media. West Texas A&M posted, obviously, but the home team did not own up to its embarrassing loss.
This is going to haunt Arizona for the rest of the women’s college basketball season. You have to post the score. Even if it’s an exhibition game. Don’t be cowards.
