The high school basketball incident should not reflect on the champions. Their head coach wants people to remember who started it and to give his team their well-deserved flowers for how they handled adversity.
Barton played the state championship without five players because of the brawl.
The Class 2A semifinal game very quickly devolved into mayhem with one second left on the clock. England threw a sucker punch, which led to a bench-clearing brawl with Barton.
Players and fans got involved with the fight. Coaches, administrators and local law enforcement were unable to contain the situation for quite some time. It ultimately spilled out into the parking lot.
Officials were forced to rule the result as final because of the ugly situation.
The Bears advanced to the state championship game but their participation was in doubt because of a criminal investigation. They did not know who was going to be allowed to play. They were not sure whether the Arkansas Athletic Association would revoke their participation because of the melee.
Barton did get to compete. However, five players were suspended and ruled out.
The high school basketball game got out of hand in a hurry.
It did not take long for Barton to prove it was not at all impacted by the crazy week of uncertainty. The Bears jumped out to a 22-9 lead over Mt. Vernon-Enola at the end of the first quarter.

Head coach Christian Williams set the record straight about his players and their character after the win.
“Last week, that wasn’t us, that’s not Barton basketball. People try to paint this picture because of another school…these guys showed that they’re the best team in 2A tonight by far.”
The brawl should not reflect on his team. It was England who escalated the situation in defeat. The Bears silenced all of the haters, kept their focus on the task at hand and got the job done. The past is the past.
