Barton was declared the winner of its high school basketball game against England during the Class 2A Tournament after a wild brawl prompted an early end to the semifinal matchup. The Arkansas Activities Association will conduct an investigation.

It is possible that the game could be ruled as a no contest and both schools are forced to forfeit.

Should that happen, Mt. Vernon-Enola will be declared the boys high school basketball champion by default. The Activities Association hopes to have a decision no later than Tuesday with the game currently scheduled for Thursday.

Barton defeated England.

Barton High School is a comprehensive public high school, serving approximately 350 students in Grades 7-12. As does England High School. They are separated by ~80 miles to the southeast of Little Rock. Both high school basketball programs compete in Class 2A.

The Lions entered Saturday’s semifinal matchup at 25-4. The Bears entered at 31-4.

It was an exhilarating, back-and-forth playoff game that came down to the final minute. The latter was ultimately declared the winner over the former by a score of 52-51 even though they did not play the last second of the fourth quarter.

A bench-clearing brawl forced the officials to rule the result as final. The Arkansas Activities Association issued the following statement:

“The Arkansas Activities Association is currently investigating the altercation that occurred at the conclusion of the 2A Boys State Tournament contest between England and Barton High Schools.

“The behavior exhibited by those involved directly violates the AAA’s standards of sportsmanship. What should have been a celebration of student-athletes has been overshadowed by unacceptable behavior that does not reflect the values of our member schools.

“The AAA is working in close coordination with law enforcement, administrators from both Barton and England School Districts, and host site officials to review all available video evidence and witness accounts.”

Barton will advance to the Class 2A state championship against Mt. Vernon-Enola if the win over England is in fact deemed as valid. The game is currently scheduled for Thursday.

A wild high school basketball brawl in Arkansas started with a sucker punch.

This unfortunate incident took place with one second left in the fourth quarter. England had a chance to win or tie the game with 14 seconds remaining but could not hold onto possession. Barton stole the ball away to force a game-winning turnover.

The Lions committed an intentional foul to send the Bears to the free throw line with exactly one single second remaining on the clock. However, the clock in the arena showed 00:00, so the crowd rushed onto the court thinking the game was over. It was not.

An England player threw a sucker punch to the face of a celebrating Barton player amid all of the chaos. A larger crowd then rushed in around them. A massive brawl ensued.

Here is how it looked on the live broadcast:

Other videos of the incident show the aftermath of the initial punch.

It was an all-out melee.

Fans and players from both sides got involved.

Multiple punches were thrown.

It took more than three minutes to clear the court.

Fortunately, both high school basketball teams were able to get out of the gym without injury. The same cannot be said for the fans.

“We are safe and got out with no problems,” England School District Superintendent Judy Hubbell wrote on Facebook. “We counted six police cars and one ambulance as we were trying to get out of town.”

Here is a good look at the ensuing police response as the fight spilled into the parking lot:

No arrests were made. The game did not continue. Barton was declared the winner, pending investigation. England had its season come to an end with the sucker punch.
