The Masters is on another planet when it comes to merchandise sales. The tournament generates around $70 million in merch sales throughout the week of The Masters which, if you break it down, is approximately $10 million a day, or $1 million an hour, or $16,000 a minute. No other sporting event on earth comes close to those numbers.

In golf, wearing merch from a course/club you have never been to is considered a major faux pas. But when it comes to The Masters, the rules are slightly different. For instance, if someone gifts you a Masters hat or polo it would be rude not to wear it to a friend’s Masters part or on Easter Sunday, right? And if someone asks if you’ve been you explain that it was a gift. That, to me, is a completely different situation from someone wearing a Seminole GC or Cypress Point logo without having ever played those courses. But I digress…

Secret Merch Hauls From The Masters: Augusta Goodwill Is Where It’s At

In years past, the Goodwill thrift shop in Augusta, Georgia used to put out merchandise from The Masters all year long. People would swing in pretty much any month of the year and be able to find gems.

Then they got wise to Masters merch hauls and the Goodwill in Augusta began releasing all of their merch/gear from The Masters on the Monday before the tournament. This has led to some people camping out overnight seeking all of the gear leftover from the prior year’s Masters that was donated to the store… and it is a LOT of merch.

This year, these girls were the first in line at the Augusta, Georgia Goodwill for the Masters merch drop. It was the middle of the night when they arrived but you can see in the viral video below on TikTok from @amberrobersonnn that the line was insanely long by the time the doors opened:

This one is from 2 hours after the store opened and there was still tons of gems to be found:

There’s A LOT to go around!

The average Masters patron is believed to spend around $1,000 on merchandise. That number is heavily skewed by the folks that walk into the pro shops and drop $25K+ while most might spend a few hundred. When I went last year, my first time at The Masters, I felt like I bought a gift for everyone in my life and still got out of there spending under $1,500.

So you would think that everyone in line at the Goodwill in Augusta would be hoarding as much merch as they could possibly carry but this video from @rangerdanielle shows just how much merchandise are on the shelves on the Monday before The Masters. Shirts of every color and style. Endless options:

The Masters merch hauls from the Augusta Goodwill are nothing new. Ball knowers know where to go to get the most merch for the least amount of money. BroBible’s Grayson Weir covered this story last year and had videos from a girl who broke down the prices: A needlepoint belt cost $9.99. A quarter-zip cost $15. Kids clothing was $11-13.99. A windbreaker cost $34.99. Bags were $29.99 each.

The most expensive item I purchased last year was a needlepoint Smathers & Branson belt with the Masters logo throughout. I forget what the price was but I want to say it was around $120 or $150 at most, so $9.99 is an absolute steal considering I lost 4″ on my waistline last year and the belt barely fits anymore and I need to figure out how to add a new hole.

Anyway, after going to The Masters for my first time last year I swore I’d make it back this year. I did not/am not. And that really bums me out because it was one of the best days of my life. The experience exceeds the hype by a mile. And henceforth, having gone, I can wear the merch which brings me back to my discussion above…

Would You Wear The Logo Of A Course You’ve Never Been To?

As I said above, I think there are instances where Masters merch can be worn by people who have never been if they received it as a gift. Going out and buying your own, that’s a different story altogether. Imho, go buy the ‘Azalea’ hat from another brand but don’t wear the Masters logo unless you’ve been or it was a gift.

You wouldn’t catch me dead wearing a U.S. Open or PGA Championship logo if I wasn’t at that tournament. I’ve never played the Tree Farm golf course and you won’t find me wearing their logo, though you will see that logo everywhere on patrons’ shirts around Augusta National.

What do you think, is it acceptable to buy Masters merch for yourself if you’ve never been? Let me know in the Facebook comments or via mail at cass@brobible.com.
