Austin Peay narrowly avoided a major upset loss to one of the worst college basketball teams in the Atlantic Sun after calling a timeout that did not exist. The Governors hit a buzzer-beater as time expired.
It was the craziest finish of the season thus far!
This is not the first time this kind of thing has happened in college basketball. Nor will it be the last. That does not make it any less baffling! You have to know how many timeouts you have left!
Austin Peay called a timeout like Chris Webber.
Austin Peay University is located in Clarksville, Tennessee— about an hour outside of Nashville. The Govs entered Tuesday night at 13-1 in conference play and 19-6 overall. They traveled east to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. The Ospreys are were just 4-10 in conference and 6-21 overall.
It was expected to be a blowout. Sportsbooks favored Austin Peay over North Florida by -10.5 points.
That is not what happened! The Ospreys actually jumped out to a 43-29 lead at halftime. The Governors could not get anything to fall. They lost the battle on the glass. They committed a lot of turnovers.
The script completely flipped in the second half. Austin Peay came roaring back to tie the game at 75 with less than 10 seconds remaining and forced a North Florida turnover.
However, the Governors got trapped in the corner and called a timeout. Except they did not have a timeout. It was a Chris Webber situation. The timeout did not exist!
The Ospreys got two free throws because of the subsequent technical foul. They made only one.

There were only 1.9 seconds left in the second half. Austin Peay got the ball back, down 76-75.
North Florida still lost the college basketball game on a buzzer-beater.
All of the cards fell in the underdog’s favor. They took advantage of a sleepy first half from the visitors to put themselves in a position to pull the upset. They could’ve gone up by two with less than two seconds.
It still didn’t matter. The more successful team still prevailed!
Austin Peay dialed up a Hail Mary and threw the ball into the paint from beyond half court. The ball took an extremely lucky bounce that landed right in the hands of the Govs, who immediately put it back up.
The shot went in. The buzzer sounded just milliseconds later. It was electric.
